What do you believe about yourself?
If you believe it, then it becomes true for you. Your subconscious likes to be right so it filters out anything that might cause you to think that your deep seated beliefs could be wrong. This is actually a great system as otherwise we would not be able to function. Imagine if when you got out of bed in the morning you weren't sure if the ground was solid or not...how fraught with danger life would be!
The issue with all of this is that it directly affects how you are living your life and when you go against those beliefs it can create chaos. For instance, if I believe that I am a great mother who never shouts and then find myself shouting at my son, I get much more upset than if I had believed that I was a mother who shouts to get her point across.
Beliefs also affect how people perceive you since we are all operating from different belief systems. My son is working with a chap who tells different people different things. The guy does not seem to realise that all the people he is talking with are also talking to each other. I have no doubt he has a great plan in mind for the little lies he is telling and believes that they are necessary but unfortunately that is not how it is coming across. Matthew (my son) has a firm belief that lying is bad and should never be done so his respect for the other guy is going downhill rapidly!
I grew up with a deep rooted belief that things were often too much for me. It was something my mother told me regularly. It has taken years to find it and work it out of my system, using all the various techniques I have learned over the years. It still pops up occasionally, but at least now I recognise it. As you can imagine, it really got in my way!
Many of our beliefs were taken on in childhood when something happened and we made a decision there and then about what it meant. They were rational decisions at the time, but when we look back at them as adults we can see that they do not necessarily make sense.
Here is a list of a few common beliefs, that you might like to check if you have and if you think they are affecting your life...
- Love hurts
- Money talks
- People are dishonest
- Life is a game
- Life is difficult
- Good things come to those who wait
- Good things come to those who hustle
I got the last two directly from my cat and dog. The cat finds the first one to be true, she sits and looks pretty and gets fed but the dog believes you have to make absolutely sure you are not forgotten by making as much noise as possible at meal times!
So how to you check if these, or anything else is true for you? Luckily, it is simple. You can muscle test it. The easiest way to do this is to stand up and see which way your body sways when you say the belief out loud. It sounds crazy but it works.
Start by checking which way you go....stand up and say aloud "My name is....". Use your actual name. Most people will find that they sway forwards with this. Then say "My name is...." and use something else entirely. You normally sway in the opposite direction in response to the lie. Once you have found your true and false directions, you just say the belief out loud and see which way you sway. (Quick side note - this will not work if you are dehydrated so drink some water before you try it.)
If you find a belief that you want to change, you can tap on it. Start your round of tapping as usual with your hands on your heart but instead of picking your positive word, you can state the belief at each point. See what comes up. It can be fascinating how quickly your mind gets to the root of the belief as you tap away any unwanted thoughts or emotions you are hanging onto in relation to it.
If you want some help with this send me a quick email at [email protected] or get on my calendar here and we can have a quick clarity call to see if learning more about tapping would make as much difference to your life as it does to mine and my other clients.
