Trusting Yourself When You Don’t Know What Comes Next
I have been thinking a lot about trust recently, partly because I had decided that trust would be my theme for September and partly because life has been giving me plenty of opportunities to practice it. Trust felt like a natural follow-on from my theme of flow last month, and while I was still debating whether it was the right choice, I pulled a card from Jamye Price’s Light Language deck. Of course, it was Trust! So I decided to trust my choice, with just a tiny nudge from the universe.
Choosing trust as a theme is one thing. Actually trusting when you do not know what the outcome will be is another, and I have been getting plenty of practice with that recently.
I have been doing a marketing course and learning new ways of doing things. The people teaching me know their subject, so there is value in listening to what they have to say and trying what they suggest. At the same time, I have spent years learning to listen to my own guidance, and there are moments when what I am being taught and what I am feeling do not seem to agree.
This is where my thinking can take over. Am I resisting something because I am scared of getting it wrong? Am I hesitating because of money? Am I afraid it will not work, or wondering what happens if it does work? Do I need to listen to the experts, or trust what I am feeling? I can spend a lot of time trying to work out which thought is the right one, and I suspect I am not alone in this.
Waiting to feel confident
When we do not know what will happen, thinking can give us a sense that we are doing something useful. We gather more information, go over what we already know and tell ourselves we will make a decision when we feel more confident. But what if the confidence only comes once we actually do something? We can spend so long waiting to feel ready that we never give ourselves the chance to find out.
There can be fear underneath all that thinking, I am pretty sure that is what is happening me!
We want to avoid getting something wrong or making a mistake, so we try to think our way to the decision that guarantees the outcome we want. If we can understand ourselves well enough and consider everything that could possibly happen, surely we can make the right choice.
I wonder if there is another belief hiding in there too. If we sort ourselves out enough, perhaps we imagine we will eventually reach a point where life becomes easy. We will know what to do, decisions will be obvious and we will trust ourselves completely. But what if we are waiting for something that is never really going to happen? What if trust is learning that we can be OK even when we do not know?
What if trust starts before certainty?
For me, trust is knowing that I am supported even when I cannot see exactly what comes next. It does not mean every decision will work out the way I hoped, or that I will never make a mistake or change my mind. I think it is knowing that whatever happens, I will be able to deal with it and I will still be supported.
Changing our minds is particularly important if something stops feeling good, so long as we do it from the right frame of mind, not from the fear or uncertainty.
With the marketing course, I can listen to what I am being taught and I can listen to myself. I can notice the fear and all the questions going around in my head without needing to find an answer to every one of them. At some point, I have to decide what feels right for me, actually do something and see what happens!
This is where I think awareness is really important. There is a difference between noticing what is going on and getting caught up in trying to work it all out. I can notice that I am scared of getting it wrong, for example, without deciding that I have to get rid of that fear before I do anything.
You do not have to sort yourself out first
How often do we think we need to be more confident, more healed, know more or be more certain before we can trust ourselves? We can end up working on ourselves while we wait to become the person who will finally know what to do.
But you are still you when you are unsure. Your inner wisdom has not disappeared just because you have questions, and neither has your connection to Source. Maybe you can have the doubts, the fear and the thoughts and still trust yourself enough to do the next thing, take the next small step.
For me right now, that can be as simple as taking a breath, checking in with myself and doing something with my marketing. I do not need to work out whether every thought in my head is fear, intuition, resistance or something else before I begin. I can make a choice and see where it takes me.
Trusting from where you are
Maybe trust is less about reaching a place where you have no doubts and more about trusting yourself while they are still there. You can take a breath, come back to yourself and choose what feels right without knowing exactly where it will lead.
So where are you waiting for certainty before you move? And what might your next step be if you trusted yourself from where you are now?
